Planned Giving…the gift that lasts beyond a lifetime The great use of life is to spend it on something that will outlast it. ~ William James, American psychologist and philosopher
All of the good works that have been accomplished for the glory of God at and through Mount St. Macrina have been possible only through the grace of God, the dedication of the Sisters of St. Basil, and the support of good people like you. We know that your primary interest in making a gift to the Sisters here in Uniontown is to further their work, mission and ministries, but we want to be sure that the type of gift you choose is the most beneficial to you. With the proper planning, you can make sure that you have sufficient income in retirement with special tax benefits and/or ensure that your hard-earned dollars help secure your family’s future and that of the Sisters of St. Basil. A recent report indicates that more than 60 percent of the United States adult population doesn’t have a Will. If you die without a Will owning property or money, the laws of your State will decide who inherits your estate. Rarely will the State take all of your assets, but it is possible. It is also possible that a surviving spouse will not inherit everything, even though that may be your intention. Fortunately, there are several ways to make certain that your intentions are carried out. A Last Will and Testament is like a letter to the Court providing instructions on how you want your assets to be divided and to whom. Another way to make sure your wishes are followed is to use a document called a Living Trust. This document functions similar to a Will, except that your appointed Trustee follows your directions and not those of a judge. More and more people are providing for charitable organizations, such as the Sisters of St. Basil, in their Wills and Trusts. It may be difficult for you to make a large donation to a charity right now because you need your money for living expenses and no extra funds are available. In these cases, some people are creating what is called a Charitable Remainder Trust. If you wish to add a gift to the Sisters in an existing Will or Trust, you need to do a Codicil to your Will or an amendment to your Trust. Neither of these is difficult or expensive. Proper planning is important to achieve your goals in estate planning and gift giving. It is suggested that you contact an attorney to discuss your options and to review what is best for you. What is recommended for one individual may differ completely for another based on the needs of the individual. If you don’t have an attorney, you may contact Sister Helen Millow, OSBM, Province Treasurer at 724-438-8644. |
